This session will explore how cultural humility is crucial for board governance in the longevity of a nonprofit's success by exploring the difference between cultural competency and cultural humility and sharing how nonprofit boards can navigate cultural dynamics through empathy. We will also discuss cultural arrogance, centering voices, representation -- do we have representation just for representation's sake? -- and application for cultural humility for long-term success.

Objectives

  • Clarify the distinction between cultural competency and cultural humility.
  • Identify whose voices are being centered and whose voices may be excluded in board discussions and decision-making.
  • Encourage participants to apply cultural humility principles within their board roles for more impactful and sustainable governance.

This is targeted to current nonprofit board members, potential board members, and Executive Directors. We encourage you to bring your whole board to this training and are providing a special group discount rate. Details in pricing section below.

This training is a part of the Nonprofit REDI Hub - a joint effort between SVCN and Thrive Alliance to integrate Racial Equity, Diversity and Inclusion into the nonprofit community in Santa Clara and San Mateo Counties.

Speaker

Renae Ingram, M.A.

Hello! I'm Renae, a DEIB and workplace culture speaker, consultant and facilitator.

I've been described as a people-centered, workplace agitator that leads with authenticity, accountability, and strategy for all things DEIB and workplace culture. I achieve this by presenting compelling DEIB content that uplifts the lived

experiences of staff, while also integrating overlooked historical narratives and exploring the ramifications of contemporary events. Additionally, I guide organizations in cultivating and maintaining thriving workplace cultures by

fostering cultural humility. My guiding principle is encapsulated in the motto "High expectations + High support." I currently serve on a DEIB committee for a Tech Interactive in my hometown and am enrolled in NASA's Astrophysics database of IDEA (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, and Accessibility) practitioners.

Prior to launching my own consultancy, I served as an educator and teacher coach with two nationally renowned and recognized school networks for nine years (three of which included me being a DEIB Program Manager) before transitioning into full time DEIB for a global tech company. During my time in tech, I gained the support and participation of C-suite executives with DEIB initiatives which allowed me to launch a talent development program in partnership with Vice Presidents, offering mentorship and leadership guidance to Individual Contributors. I eventually landed at an educational non-profit as their Senior Leader, Equity and Culture. During my tenure, I had the honor of spearheading the establishment of an Equity Working Group, wherein all HR policies underwent our rigorous approval process prior to being implemented organization-wide. I also championed and trained all personnel on the RAPID decision making framework to ensure equitable decision making across our organization.

Having to navigate interpersonal and systemic exclusion as an Indigenous Xicana, Queer woman, wife, parent, and co-parent, inclusion is one of my life’s passions. In my spare time I enjoy spending time with my wife and son, going to the beach, or rewatching “The Office”.
