Silicon Valley Council of Nonprofits' (SVCN) candidate fora provide an opportunity for the nonprofit community to learn the ideas, visions, and priorities of local candidates. We focus our discussion on issues that impact nonprofits as partners, contractors, community-based service providers, and advocates.
This forum will focus primarily on issues relating to children & families.
The public is welcome to attend our nonprofit candidate forum. However, please be advised that SVCN will be prioritizing questions from SVCN members and nonprofit leaders.

Moderator: Frederick Ferrer, CEO, Child Advocates of Silicon ValleyFrederick J. Ferrer as CEO of Child Advocates of Silicon Valley, Ferrer leads the organization’s advocacy efforts to support foster children in Santa Clara County. Leading efforts to strengthen the Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) program in Santa Clara County, Ferrer has added new community partnerships, enrichment programs and child assessments in his first three years at Child Advocates. He leads the agency’s efforts in its commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. He has over three decades of nonprofit leadership experience in Silicon Valley, having led numerous groundbreaking program, public policy and systems reform initiatives.
Sylvia Arenas serves on the San José City Council, where she has been a tireless champion for the needs of children, families, and working people. She is focused on changing systems to make generational change for our families.
From spearheading an almost $20M dollar investment of federal funds for childcare and education, to leading a bipartisan effort to refocus our Police Department on fighting a rising wave of sexual assault and violence against women, Sylvia is the leading advocate on the City Council for ensuring that vulnerable women and children have a voice.
Before serving on the City Council, Sylvia received an M.P.A. from the University of San Francisco, and served as a member of the Evergreen Elementary School District Board of Trustees. Her professional experience includes working in youth intervention and early childhood educational agencies, including First 5 Santa Clara County, Gardner Health Services, and the City of San Jose's Parks, Recreation, and Neighborhood Services. She is a proud lifelong San Josean, and a long-time resident of Evergreen, where she lives with her husband José, son Andres, and daughter Annaise.
After his parents fled Beirut, Lebanon, Johnny Khamis and his family lived "the American Dream”. From growing up in San Jose in a struggling, immigrant family, attending public schools, and living in low-income housing to starting his own company, Western Benefit Solutions, Johnny’s experiences laid the foundation for his views of how government should serve its people.
Johnny was first elected to the San Jose City Council in November 2012 representing District 10, the Almaden Valley and Blossom Valley areas of South San Jose. He was reelected in 2016. Although intended as a criticism by some, Johnny takes great pride in being labeled “The Numbers Guy” on the City Council because of his focus on fiscal accountability. He has worked to find savings on property leases, worked to reduce bond interest rates and uncovered fraudulent activities on VTA. His work has helped to streamline the building department, reducing permit fees for home remodels. He has fought to rebuild our police force, and against laws that make our community less safe.
