Nonprofit leaders rate the ongoing affordable housing shortage as an extremely important policy issue that our nonprofit community should tackle. SVCN is pleased to be able to partner with the affordable housing community to bring to you this housing policy series.

This March, we'll tackle three key housing issues of the day. Our goal is to ensure that nonprofit leaders and their constituents understand the components of the big housing policy decisions that our local governments will be making to have the tools to engage knowledgably as advocates on these issues.

The first deep dive will help nonprofit leaders to understand the "Housing Element" process--the process by which California cities plan for affordable housing every 7 years.

Our Panelists:

  • Aaron Eckhouse, California YIMBY
  • Kalisha Webster, Housing Choices
  • Nadia Aziz, Law Foundation of Silicon Valley

Speakers

Aaron Eckhouse

Aaron Eckhouse is the Regional Policy Manager for California YIMBY. He has worked there since 2018 supporting state, regional, and local efforts to address California’s housing shortage. Aaron grew up in Iowa after his parents were forced out of the Bay Area by high housing costs and underfunded public schools. He currently lives in Oakland with his bike and cooking supplies.

Kalisha Webster Housing Advocate, Housing Choices

Kalisha is a Housing Advocate at Housing Choices, an organization serving people with developmental and other disabilities wanting to live independently in their communities. Kalisha trains and organizes self-advocates to educate local elected officials, city and county housing staff, and housing developers about opportunities to plan for and include people with developmental and other disabilities in their local housing plans. Her advocacy has focused on getting cities to adopt more inclusive housing policies as part of their Housing Elements as well as advocating to affordable housing developers to include preferences in a certain number of units in their projects for people with developmental disabilities who would benefit from on-site supportive services. Prior to taking on her role as Housing Advocate, Kalisha was a Housing Coordinator in San Mateo County at Housing Choices, working directly with adults and families with children with developmental and other disabilities to help them find and maintain housing. She uses this experience working as a Housing Coordinator to guide her advocacy. Kalisha earned a B.A. in Social Work with a minor in Human Rights from San Jose State University and has worked in a variety of educational and social service organizations in her career.

Nadia Aziz

Nadia Aziz is the Housing Directing Attorney at the Law Foundation of Silicon Valley.  Nadia has led groundbreaking housing litigation and policy advocacy throughout Silicon Valley in her role at the Law Foundation.  Her work includes a multi-year effort to save Palo Alto’s only mobile home park, and class action fair housing litigation that asserted the right of Section 8 voucher holders to reasonable accommodations for additional bedrooms.  Before working at the Law Foundation, Nadia was a housing attorney with Bay Area Legal Aid's Santa Clara County office where she represented tenants in unlawful detainer matters. Nadia graduated from UCLA School of Law in 2007.  Nadia is married and has two daughters.
