Redistricting Workshop Series

June 30, July 7, and July 14 at 2pm - 3pm

This workshop series will cover redistricting (drawing electoral district boundaries) basics, how to engage in the process locally, tools, and more: 

Redistricting 101 (June 30, 2-3 pm) - WHY. You and the communities you serve should understand how redistricting affects political power and how our diverse communities are represented in our legislative bodies. Learn about how electoral boundaries are drawn, and how to engage community members in the process.

Redistricting 201 (July 7, 2-3 pm) - HOW. Learn about redistricting law, communities of interest, and how online mapping tools can be used to determine which district lines support representation.

Redistricting 301 (July 14, 2-3 pm) - ACT. Engage in the redistricting processes in Santa Clara County, learn how the advisory commission in San Jose and the advisory body in Santa Clara County differ, and hear from representatives from San Jose, Santa Clara County, and Sunnyvale.

Johnathan Mehta Stein, Executive Director of California Common Cause, will share his experience as a civil rights attorney and democracy reform advocate.


SVCN has partnered with California Common Cause, the Latina Coalition of Silicon Valley, and the Asian Law Alliance to host this workshop series.

Speakers

Jonathan Mehta Stein (he/him) Executive Director, California Common Cause

A civil rights attorney and democracy reform advocate, Jonathan Mehta Stein is the Executive Director of California Common Cause. Jonathan spent four years as the head of the Voting Rights & Census Program at Asian Law Caucus, where he worked to increase access to California’s democracy for historically disenfranchised communities. Jonathan previously worked as a voting rights staff attorney for the ACLU of California and was the Chair of the Oakland Public Ethics Commission. Jonathan is a South Bay native.


Gabriela Chavez-Lopez President, Latina Coalition of Silicon Valley

Gabriela is passionate about uplifting and championing voices around challenging issues in the community — particularly those that disproportionately impact Latinas & people of color. As Communications and Membership Manager at SV@Home Gabriela is responsible for fostering strong relationships with members and sponsors and executing an effective communications strategy that supports SV@Home’s mission of driving the creation of affordable housing for a more vibrant and equitable Silicon Valley.


Jaqui Guzman Deputy City Manager, City of Sunnyvale

Jaqui manages high-profile city-wide projects under the direction of the City Manager and oversees citywide communications. Jaqui started her career in public administration as a Local Government Management Fellow at the City of San Jose and has served in a variety of roles from Budget Analyst to Acting HR Manager. Prior to working in local government, Jaqui provided non-partisan fiscal and policy advice to the California State Legislature, worked as a community engagement facilitator, and coordinated reproductive health programs in California and Latin America. She also serves on the boards of AACI, Sunnyvale Community Services, and is an advisor to the Latina Coalition of Silicon Valley. Jaqui holds a Master's Degree in Public Policy from UCLA's School of Public Affairs and a B.A. in Diplomacy and World Affairs from Occidental College.


Melanie Jimenez Perez Program Manager, Office of County Executive at Santa Clara County

Melanie is Program Manager in the Santa Clara County Executive’s Office. For over 15 years, she has developed and managed several government programs, working in the City of San José’s Mayor’s Office, the San José Police Department, the County’s Reentry Resource Center, the Sheriff’s Office, and the Office of the County Executive. She demonstrates a commitment to improving her community and strives to ensure the community benefits the most from the programs she develops and manages. In Melanie’s current role, she focuses on strategic and intergovernmental initiatives to reinforce the County’s role as a safety net for the most vulnerable members of the Santa Clara County community. She is currently leading the County’s pilot to provide a basic income to transition age youth exiting foster care services, managing county-wide workplans to address racial inequity and reform policing, and the 2021 Redistricting Process. Melanie has a Bachelor of Arts degree in theatre from Santa Clara University and a master’s degree in public administration from the University of San Francisco.

Chris Chaffee Chief Operations Officer, Redistricting Partners

Chief Operations Officer with Redistricting Partners, Chaffee has recently completed work with the California Counts statewide Census outreach program and multiple community- based organizations in developing and implementing grassroots strategies to increase the count in traditionally hard to count areas. Chaffee also worked to create the Sacramento County Community Coalition in 2017 and 2018 to organize education and outreach with the implementation of the Voter Choice Act. By the end of 2018, the Coalition included over 60 civic organizations, including the League of Women Voters Sacramento, ACLU – CA, LULAC, Common Cause, Organize Sac, Sacramento ACT, Sacramento Urban League, and many others.


Kimi Shigetani Chief Administrative Officer, Redistricting Partners

Chief Administrative Officer at Redistricting Partners, Kimi is a professional with over 20-years experience in leadership roles, education and program development, association and non-profit management, conference and event planning and in 2011, as Vice-President of the Community College League she oversaw a program for Redistricting and California Voting Rights Act transitions for dozens of community college districts. Shigetani’s role will be to help administer the consultant team and serve as an administrative point of contact for city staff.
