Silicon Valley Council of Nonprofits' (SVCN) and Choose Children's candidate fora provide an opportunity for the nonprofit community to learn the ideas, visions, and priorities of local candidates. We will center our discussion on policies and programs that directly impact children, with a clear focus on issues that affect nonprofits as partners, government contractors, community-based service providers, and advocates.

In this space, we also focus on key policy areas such as affordable childcare, college and career development, food security, transitional-age youth empowerment, and mental health.

The public is welcome to attend our nonprofit candidate forum. However, please be advised that we will be prioritizing questions from nonprofit members and leaders.

Moderator: Lauren Martinez, Reporter, ABC 7 News Bay Area

All registered candidates for the Board of Supervisors District 5 have been invited to the Thriving Children & Families Candidate Forum. The following candidates have confirmed their attendance:

District 5 Candidates

Margaret Abe Koga Councilmember, Mountain View City Council

Mountain View Councilmember Margaret Abe-Koga is a working mom and former small business owner. She served on the Santa Clara County Board of Education and since 2007 Margaret on the City Council, as the first Asian American woman ever to serve as Mayor. Her commitment to service builds from experiences her immigrant parents who had no access to affordable healthcare, and as a barrier-breaking woman of color elected in Santa Clara County, and as a breast cancer survivor. She made Mountain View the first City in the County to enact a minimum wage increase; started the County’s Clean Energy Authority; maintained and increased law enforcement staffing; and improved emergency communications used to coordinate public safety response. Margaret is running for Supervisor to ensure every family has access to housing and safe neighborhoods; quality healthcare and mental health services; good-paying jobs; clean air, water, and open spaces for our future generations.

Barry Chang

For more information, please review the Barry Chang for Supervisor website.

Sally Lieber Member, California State Board of Equalization

Sally Lieber served as a City Councilmember and Mayor, as a County Commissioner for Social Services, and represented Silicon Valley in the State Assembly. She is currently elected countywide to the State Board of Equalization.

At the local level, she enacted a ban on advertising tobacco products to children, created childcare and adult day health facilities, fought against displacement of renters and for mobile home and apartment rent control, and for low-income and immigrant families’ access to leadership opportunities and services.

In the Assembly, Lieber waged a successful three-year battle to raise the statewide minimum wage, enacted renters’ protections and authored numerous bills to protect civil rights and provide for mental health and disability services.

She authored the California Trafficking Victims’ Protection Act, the Gwen Araujo Justice for Victims Act to address the use of the ‘panic defense’ in hate crimes cases, and legislation to create the San Francisco Bay Restoration Authority.

Sandy Sans Business Owner

Sandy is a lifelong Californian with a background in engineering and real estate. At the same time, he has had a lifelong passion for understanding people and what makes them happy and successful.

This last year he volunteered for the Common Sense Party and Forward Party in order to bring a new political party with new perspectives to California. Sandy feels our political process is broken and often only brings one perspective or approach to our problems and that has handicapped us for solving difficult issues such as homelessness, housing and transportation.

Government is mired in top down policies and procedures. There is not enough focus on and reward for results. He believes in giving more responsibility to the people on the front line of our problems. His vision is for Santa Clara County to become an example of how government can and should work.
